Alfano says Lampedusa deserves Nobel prize
More tragedies likely to occur on seas, says Alfano04 October, 14:27
Lampedusa, closer to Africa than Sicily, has been the point of arrival for thousands of migrants fleeing North Africa and other regions for sanctuary in Europe, Alfano said, following a shipwreck that claimed some 300 lives in one of Europe's worst migrant disasters in decades.
Too often, similar tragedies have occurred and likely will again as desperate people flee on crafts that often can't make the trip, he told parliament in a report on his visit to the island Thursday.
"There is no reason to think that what happened yesterday in Lampedusa is the last time," said Alfano.
The boat that caught fire and capsized early Thursday morning was carrying some 500 Somali and Eritrean asylum seekers including women and children.
