UNHCR praises rescue efforts in ship disaster
Concerns over rapid rise in number of migrants who die at sea03 October, 16:36
Antonio Guterres of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a statement shortly after hearing of a shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa that claimed at least 94 lives.
Guterres praised the "swift action taken by the Italian Coast Guard to save lives".
More than 150 migrants have been rescued but 250 are still missing, officials said. Guterres also expressed his "dismay at the rising global phenomenon of migrants and people fleeing conflict or persecution and perishing at sea".
The UNHCR is working with countries to provide better alternatives to dangerous sea crossings.
Earlier this week, 13 migrants drowned while trying to reach Sicily.
