Rouhani is 'different' says Bonino
'If Iran part of Syria conflict, must be part of solution'03 October, 17:16
"We have taken note of the fact that so far, the actions and statements (of the new Iranian leadership) are different from those of preceding administrations", Bonino told reporters after an Italy-Saudi Arabia Forum in Rome. Bonino voiced her satisfaction at the "resumption of the structural dialogue on human rights between the EU and Iran, which had been interrupted". While "one can always rush" to break relations off, "restoring them with hope and caution" requires commitment, Bonino went on. If Iran "is a part of the conflict" in Syria, it must be "held responsible" and become part of the solution, she added.
Rouhani, elected last month to succeed firebrand Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has won plaudits for a less aggressive stance towards the United States, a more conciliatory approach to talks on the Mideast, an apparent recognition of the scale of the Shoah, and a greater willingness to talk about Iran's controversial nuclear programme.
But Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu told the United Nations that nothing substantive had changed, calling the new president a "wolf in sheep's clothing".
