Pasta, tomato puree', olive oil, fruit, vegetables, milk, biscuits, nappies, soap and detergent are available at a 25% discount or, for people on the Milanese social-service rolls, free of charge.
The Social Market was opened Monday in Via Leoncavallo in a property that used to be "a hub" for pushing drugs sent north from Sicily, the city council and two charities said.
Unemployment has surged and poverty risen to a recent high amid Italy's deepest recession in 20 years.
