Pilot makes emergency landing at Rome's Fiumicino airport
All 151 passengers unharmed after landing gear fails to open30 September, 11:54
All 151 passengers on the flight from Madrid were unharmed.
The pilot alerted the control tower of trouble with the plane's right landing gear at around 20:30. The tower confirmed that the gear had failed to open.
The pilot landed the plane shortly after 21:00 using only rear and left landing wheels.
When the plane hit the tarmac it inclined heavily on the right wing, and came to a stop on the outer edge of the runway. Passengers were quickly evacuated down emergency slides.
"The pilot and crew were good, very good. But we passengers were too, even though there was a lot of tension," said one of the passengers.
"We expected worse. We became aware that something was wrong when the airplane continued to circle," said another.
The passenger described two or three aborted attempts at landing before the pilot announced that an emergency landing was necessary due to the malfunctioning equipment.
"The crew was really very good," the passenger added. An investigation has been opened into the cause of the mechanical trouble.
