(ANSA) - Milan, September 27 - A new climate of consensus must be developed among world leaders around the importance of food security, including the sustainability and distribution of food, says Italian Premier Enrico Letta.
And these vital themes are at the heart of the work of Milan Expo 2015, Letta recently told world leaders gathered in New York at the United Nations.
Italy intends to make these issues its focus during its six-month term in the presidency of the Council of the European Union, Letta said during high-level meetings on sustainable development organized alongside the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Italy will hold the rotating presidency from July through December 2014.
"We should address the root causes of the ills afflicting our world, rather than limit ourselves to the side effects," Letta said. "The time has come to launch a new global consensus on food".
And Milan's Expo, with its theme, "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" will provide an excellent venue for such work, he added.
"Being a country rich in tradition and culture that is linked to food," it seems only natural that food production, distribution and sustainability are all matters of great interest to Italy, said Letta.
From the UN, Letta also visited New York's famed Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), for the opening of an exhibition "Dante Ferretti: Design and Construction for the Cinema" featuring works created by the Italian production designer.
Ferretti has worked on more than 50 films with such masters as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini, and Martin Scorsese, and a collection of his most influential and popular film sets have been preserved for display in this exhibition.
From MOMA, Letta toured New York's massive food emporium Eataly, where the premier also promoted Milan Expo.
As many as 20 million visitors are expected at the Milan Expo, which runs from May 1 until October 31 2015.
Preparations on a 1.1-million-square-meter site have been underway for years.
As work progresses on the substantive themes of the Italian world's fair, organizers have also announced the Disney Italia will design the mascot for Expo Milano 2015.
"The design of the universal exposition's mascot needs an original creative effort and an incredible communicative capacity," said Giuseppe Sala, commissioner for Expo Milan. He noted that the character to be designed by The Walt Disney Company in Italy will become Expo's leading ambassador and will be reproduced in a wide range of advertising and merchandising products for the world's fair.
Expo organizers say it will be expected to present a cheerful, friendly, funny face that is characteristic of Disney products.
"With a strong experience in the entertainment sector, Disney Italia has presented a very impressive proposal, which will certainly win Expo Milano 2015 visitors' love," said Sala.
The Expo Milan 2015 official mascot will be presented sometime in the next several weeks.
The Disney corporation has something of a history with world's fairs.
A popular Disneyland attraction, the "It’s a Small World" boat ride, was actually designed by The Walt Disney Company for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, as the Expo was called at that time.
