Rash of attacks against women plaguing Italy
One woman beaten with tire iron, another thrown from balcony25 September, 16:34
Two of the victims in the three latest attacks are in hospital with serious condition, including a woman suffering severe head injuries after she was thrown Tuesday from a balcony near Rome.
Her husband, who was already under house arrest on drug charges, fled.
In another case late Tuesday, a man who had stalked and threatened the life of his ex-wife for some time rammed his van into her vehicle, causing her serious head injuries.
Police arrested the man on charges of stalking, causing serious injury and violence, and said he told them he would not accept his victim's decision to end their marriage.
On Wednesday, a man in Castiglione delle Stiviere, in the province of Mantua, reportedly caught his wife with her lover in a parked car.
After ramming the vehicle with his car, he beat his wife with a tire iron while the lover apparently fled.
The man is now facing charges of attempted murder.
Abuse of women has become a major social concern in Italy, with the government recently passing legislation to try to help end what is termed "femicide".
