Italy ratifies Arms Trade Treaty
Fifth country to approve arms-flow charter25 September, 14:01
The United Nations Treaty, which requires ratification by 50 states to come into force, has now been ratified by five.
The UN General Assembly adopted the ATT on April 2. It regulates the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. The UN said the treaty "will foster peace and security by putting a stop to destabilizing arms flows to conflict regions. "It will prevent human rights abusers and violators of the law of war from being supplied with arms. "And it will help keep warlords, pirates, and gangs from acquiring these deadly tools".
