Soccer: Di Canio fired by Sunderland
Italian leaves club at bottom of Premier League23 September, 12:35
Di Canio, an explosive and controversial character, leaves the northern side at the bottom of the Premier League after they suffered four defeats in five games so far this season. The 45-year-old was put in charge of Sunderland in March, an appointment that raised a storm about Di Canio's Fascist sympathies, although the controversy eased after he steered the struggling side clear of relegation last term. The former Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan, Celtic and West Ham player led the previous club he coached, Swindon Town, to promotion from the fourth to the third tier of English football before resigning in February.
