Parents pull children after autistic pupil joins class +rpt+
Naples families say not guilty of discrimination23 September, 18:37
The parents of schoolchildren in a 20-strong class at the 'Sequino' elementary school in Mugnano, Naples initiated the action after the school authorities failed to cave in to their protests.
The regional academic director, meanwhile, has announced the local government is ready to send additional support teaching staff to the school should they be required.
The parents, separately, have said their decisions were not discriminatory but based on concerns progress in class would be slowed down by a student with possible learning difficulties.
The autistic child in question is six years old, and had already been to nursery school with some of the students.
Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin criticised the parents.
