Pope tells bishops they should 'smell of their sheep'
Shepherds must show humility, not 'careerism', Francis says19 September, 14:47
"Be shepherds with the smell of your sheep, in the midst of your people like Jesus the Good Shepherd," he told them at an audience in the Vatican.
Francis said they should "go into the midst of the faithful, on the outskirts of your dioceses and in all those 'existential outskirts' where there is suffering, solitude and human degradation".
The pope, who has won admiration for his common touch and humble approach, warned the bishops not to "fall into the spirit of careerism" but instead show "humility, austerity and basic common sense" and spend as much time as they could helping their priests cope with people's problems.
