Italy's Constitutional Court elects new president

The new 69-year-old chief received eight out of 15 votes, and will serve until June 28, 2014, when his nine-year-term on the court expires. Constitutional Court Judge Luigi Mazzella, 81, was elected vice president. Italy's Constitutional Court is composed of 15 judges who serve terms of nine years each. Five are appointed by the president, five selected by parliament and five are elected by peers from the courts.
Silvestri was elected to the Constitutional Court by the Italian parliament on June 28, 2005.
