Tensions run high ahead of vote on Berlusconi's Senate seat18 September, 20:01
"It's essential in such a delicate period that the free dialectic of political positions takes place in a climate of civil debate and scrupulous respect of the regulations," Napolitano said in a statement.
The head of state also expressed solidarity for House Speaker Laura Boldrini, who has had several angry exchanges with members of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and been the target of a abuse.
One M5S MP accused Boldrini of bias on Wednesday and called on her to quit. Napolitano said Boldrini had been hit by "unacceptable attacks that cannot be tolerated under the principle of democratic co-existence".
