Italian leaders say 9/11 can never be repeated11 September, 19:49
The attacks on the US "have affected our history and will continue" to play a role in policy, said Italy's foreign minister, Emma Bonino, on the anniversary of the attacks.
She recalled how, when she first heard the news of the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City, she felt "a blow to the heart".
Speaking to the Lower House, Premier Enrico Letta said he felt a "closeness and friendship towards our American allies, especially today, September 11, a day that evokes a drama that should not ever again be repeated". His comments were greeted by long applause.
