PD calls for halt to 'Fascist' initiatives in Veneto
Demands Northern League governor intervene on 'Casa Pound'10 September, 19:03
The motion filed by the PD petitions Venice's regional administration "to take on all initiatives for impeding demonstrations and initiatives on Veneto territory that, through the use of symbols and flags of the former Fascist regime, offend the values of the Resistance and the Italian Constitution". The PD councillors made particular reference to the 'Casa Pound' (Pound House) holiday to take place at the rural town of Revine Lago from September 12 to 15.
The social movement founded in 2003 by squatters in a State-owned building in Rome now has thousands of members and is associated with Italy's far-right wing.
The group's name comes from the esteemed poet Ezra Pound, an American expatriate who supported Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime (1925-1943) in Italy.
"CasaPound has often been rendered a protagonist of Fascist apology and episodes of racial hatred and incitement of xenophobia," the petition said.
"Precisely the Revine Lago territory was hit hard during the Resistance: entire villages destroyed by fires caused by Nazi-Fascist retaliation, dozens of partisans killed and civilians captured and deported".
