Health minister orders hospital reviews
Patient deaths coming under scrutiny27 August, 18:35
The San Giovanni di Dio Hospital in Orbetello, where a 17-year-old girl died after being sent home with a broken rib, is coming under scrutiny along with the Grosseto Hospital, where a 76-year-old man died from a suspected bad blood transfusion on Sunday.
The man had been admitted on August 8 for pneumonia, and died shortly after receiving the transfusion on Sunday, family members said.
Local officials from the state health department (ASL) have said the man likely received a transfusion of blood allocated for another patient.
In the case of the 17-year-old girl, it's believed that an undiagnosed broken rib injured her lung which eventually led to her death.
In both cases, the health minister has asked that procedures be reviewed, including quality levels and safety requirements.
