Over 200,000 hens to be slaughtered to stem bird flu spread
No human risk from recent outbreaks, authorities say26 August, 14:51
The operation follows a new outbreak of bird flu detected at a farm not far from the nearby town of Ostellato on Friday.
Though tests carried out on the birds showed no signs of the disease, also known as avian influenza, authorities ordered the slaughter as part of wider preventative measures aimed at stemming its spread.
Eggs from the farm will also be destroyed and all possibly infected materials will be incinerated.
The outbreaks have not posed any human risk, health authorities said.
