De Mistura says marines could be free for Christmas
Italy envoy optimistic in India fishermen murder case16 August, 17:47
The trial could begin by early September and if it concludes "relatively quickly" the marines could be home for Christmas, Staffan de Mistura said on his return from meetings with Indian officials in New Delhi.
"I'll do anything to make it happen," de Mistura said in an interview with RAI radio.
While in New Delhi, the envoy also told Indian authorities that four other Italian sailors who were witnesses to the shootings of the fishermen would not be available for interviews by investigators in the case of Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre.
That has been a contentious issue as police wanted to interview all witnesses. Latorre and Girone are accused by Indian authorities of the double homicides of Valentine (aka Gelastine) and Ajesh Binki in February 2012 after allegedly mistaking them for pirates while guarding a merchant ship off the coast of the southern Kerala region.
