On job only 10 days16 August, 12:21
Cosimo Fazio, the 56-year-old head of the local Reggio Calabria police department in southern Italy, died Thursday after only 10 days on the job. Summer is the busiest season for crossings by migrants departing from North Africa, taking advantage of better sea conditions. Italy's reception centers are routinely overwhelmed. According to the Italian Council for Refugees (CIR), more than 18,000 migrants have died in the Mediterranean over the last 15 years.
