Some 1,000 Italians march against U.S. satellite system

'MUOS bad for health, environment'

Some 1,000 Italians march against U.S. satellite system (ANSA) - Niscemi, August 9 - An estimated 1,000 people marched Friday in protest of a new United States satellite communications base under construction in Sicily.

Construction of the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) site by the US military has stirred controversy in Sicily, and in past instances demonstrators have clashed with police. While opponents say MUOS will threaten world peace, the environment, and the health of locals, Italy's defence ministry says the system is "essential for NATO operations in the Mediterranean and therefore, for national security".

Some nine protestors on Friday climbed antennas inside the base.
