Unions 'will fight cuts' to Italy's oldest music fest (ANSA) - Florence, May 13 - Efforts are underway to save the chorus and orchestra of Italy's oldest music festival, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Unions representing musicians, singers, dancers, technical and administrative staff of the festival say they will meet on Tuesday with management to present a plan to save jobs.

As many as 119 positions are on the chopping block, say the unions.

That represents "the true liquidation of the Maggio Musicale," said Paul Aglietti of the CGIL labor-union confederation.

But Francesco Bianchi, commissioner of the Maggio Musicale, said that the organization has no other choice but to make cuts.
