Mayor in Calabria region getting death threats (ANSA) - Rome, May 13 - Italy's organization of municipalities is calling for more support after the mayor of a southern town reported receiving death threats.

Antonio Barile, mayor of San Giovanni in Fiore in Calabria's Cosenza province, has received letters threatening his life, Alessandro Cattaneo, acting president of the National Association of Italian Municipalities, said Monday.

Such intimidation is "an alarming sign, targeting leaders and municipal mayors, directly affecting the civil community, democracy and the rule of law".

Cattaneo called for better protection and support for local leaders from higher levels of government for the good of communities.
