Telecom to appeal 104-mln-euro antitrust fine
Competition watchdog says it abused dominant position

(ANSA) - Rome, May 10 - Telecom Italia on Friday said it
would appeal a 103.8-million-euro fine announced by Italy's
Antitrust authority earlier in the day for abusing its dominant
market position, according to a statement released by the
Italian telecommunications company.Telecom Italia said it had always guaranteed equal access rights to its network to all telecom operators on national territory. The company also said it would appeal the competition watchdog's decision. The antitrust authority contends that Telecom "abused its dominant position in relation to its infrastructure network". When announcing the fine, the regulator said it had identified "two separate actions through which it had protected its market share by creating obstacles to competitors' offers to retail clients".
Telecom was formerly owned by the Italian State before being privatized in the 1990s. It inherited the infrastructure network it had owned as a public services provider when it was sold.
