(ANSA) - Florence, May 10 - Prosecutors in Florence on
Friday issued an indictment request to try Mafia 'boss of
bosses' Salvatore Toto' Riina for a 1984 train bombing that left
16 people dead and 267 wounded.
Riina, known as The Beast, is already in prison under
maximum security for crimes including ordering the 1992-1993
slayings of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo
Borsellino.
Investigators say he was also the mastermind behind the
Train 904 Massacre on the night of December 23, 1984 when a bomb
exploded on a Naples-Milan train while it was passing through a
mountain tunnel near San Benedetto Val di Sambro, between
Bologna and Florence. The motive was allegedly to distract the attention of law enforcement officials who, at the time, were carrying out an offensive against Cosa Nostra in Sicily.
