(ANSA) - Lampedusa, May 10 - The coastguard brought 180
immigrants to shore on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa
early Friday.
The immigrants were rescued during the night from two
motorized rubber dinghies located roughly 125 and 130 miles from
shore, respectively. One contained 98 people, including 18 women - one of whom was pregnant - and two newborn babies. The other, found adrift, contained 82 people, all men. The Lampedusa immigrant centre is currently holding 600 people, and no transfers are planned.
Lampedusa is located off the coast of Sicily and near Tunisia. Seasonally calm seas favor illegal migration from North Africa during spring and summer months.
