Camorra soccer-betting scheme busted (ANSA) - Naples, April 22 - A dragnet against alleged mafia-controlled illegal sports betting ensnared 38 suspects across four regions of Southern Italy on Monday. The Carabinieri police arrested 21 people and banned 17 from residing in Campania, the region where Naples is located.

Three million euros of assets were also seized.

The orders - carried out in the regions of Campania, Calabria, Puglia, Sicily - were the fruit of a probe into an illegal online system of soccer betting allegedly controlled by the Casalesi clan of the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra. Investigators found what they believe was a complex, sophisticated online platform adapted from the electronic system used by legal companies.

The suspects faces charges of mafia association and conspiracy to conduct illegal gaming and betting.
