(ANSA) - Turin, March 22 - A prisoner in an Italian jail
committed suicide on Friday, highlighting the dramatic
conditions in Italy's overcrowded jails.The 53-year-old Italian national was detained in Ivrea jail in the northwestern Piedmont region and had one year still to serve.
His death took to 13 the number of suicides and to 43 the number of deaths in Italian jails since the start of the year.
"Despite concerned appeals and declarations of intent by politicians and top institutional representatives the situation remains unchanged," Leo Beneduci, secretary-general of the autonomous union of penitentiary police Osapp, said.
