India to set up special tribunal for Italian marines
Anti-piracy servicemen arrive in New Delhi for homicide trial22 March, 14:13
The declaration follows a surprise climbdown by the Italian government, which on Thursday decided to send Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone back to India to face justice for allegedly shooting two Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy mission in February 2012 after earlier announcing that the pair would be staying in Italy when a four-week permit for home leave expired.
The men arrived in New Delhi on Friday. In January the Supreme Court ruled that the case should be taken out of the hands of the southern state of Kerala, where the shooting took place, and referred to a special tribunal in New Delhi to assess jurisdiction.
Italy has always claimed that India should not have jurisdiction over the matter as the incident took place in international waters. Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi and Defence Minister Giampaolo Di Paola are due to report to parliament on the matter next Tuesday.
