Police seize 20 puppies being trafficked into Italy (ANSA) - Vercelli, March 21 - Police from the Piedmont city of Vercelli near Italy's northern border with France on Thursday seized 20 puppies of various breeds being transported by van in cramped conditions and without proper documentation.

The two men shipping the animals in a van with Hungarian license plates face charges of cruelty to animals, commercial fraud, forgery and illicit trade.

Police said that many of the puppies had not yet been weaned and had not been vaccinated.

All 20 were taken into state custody and will be released for adoption, police said.
