Cheese bandits foiled in nighttime Parmigiano raid
Group's attempt to steal from factory sets off alarm system21 March, 17:50
Warehouse alarms were set off by the intruders' unauthorised access, but the group managed to escape before security personnel arrived on the scene. The group has been active in stealing the costly cheeses around the Emilia area of central Italy. Parmigiano Reggiano cheese has had the European Union's Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status, which the consortium has fought to defend in European courts.
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is currently being evaluated for its "Intangible World Heritage" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture organization (UNESCO).
