Italy police chief Manganelli dies

(ANSA) - Rome, March 20 - Italian police chief Antonio
Manganelli died Wednesday in a Rome hospital from complications
after an operation to remove a brain swelling three weeks ago.Manganelli, 63, led the Italian police force from June 25, 2007.
He was No.2 in the police crime-fighting elite unit in the 1980s and worked closely with anti-Mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, both killed by Cosa Nostra bombs in 1992.
In 1991 he became head of the central operating service SCO and the service for protecting informants. He was Naples prefect from 1997 and Palermo prefect from 1999. He was appointed deputy police chief in 2001.
Avellino-born Manganelli had a law degree from Naples University and a post-graduate degree in criminology from Modena University.
He taught at Italy's top police academy and had a string of publications to his name, ranging from investigative techniques to kidnappings.
