Rome 'withstands' Francis' inauguration mass, mayor says (ANSA) - Rome, March 19 - Rome 'withstood' the massive influx of tourists and faithful from all over the world for Pope Francis' inauguration mass, city mayor Gianni Alemanno said on Tuesday.

"On the basis of information available so far everything has gone well, there have not been any particular disruptions - once again the city has passed the test," he said. "Francis' voice was able to ring out calmly and strongly, giving us real hope for the future," Alemanno concluded. The new pope, who was elected to succeed Benedict XVI at last week's conclave, celebrated mass at St Peter's on Tuesday morning in the presence of hundreds of thousands of well-wishers and delegations from over 130 countries around the world.
