Judge orders 18 to stand trial for 2009 Messina flood deaths
Former city mayor, regional emergency service head among accused

(ANSA) - Messina, March 18 - A judge ordered 18 people to
stand trial for the deaths of 37 residents of towns skirting
Messina after they were hit by massive flooding in 2009.The judge, Salvatore Mastroeni, said the 18 accused will stand trial for multiple deaths and disaster.
Among the accused are the former mayors of Messina, Giuseppe Buzzanca, and Scaletta Zanclea (one of the two towns involved), Mario Briguglio, as well as the former head of the regional emergency services management unit, Salvatore Cocina.
