Church bells ring out across Italy on word of new pope
St Mark's, Milan Cathedral welcome 266th pontiff

(ANSA) - Rome, March 13 - Church bells rang out across
Italian cities after white smoke billowed from the smokestack
above the Sistine Chapel, indicating that a pope had been
elected on Wednesday.
The campanile in St Mark's Square rang across Venice, as
did the belfry in the Milan Cathedral and towns across the
country as news spread that the 266th pontiff of the Catholic
Church had been elected in the fifth ballot.
