Civil servants garner over 6 million euros from unauthorized pay

Over 11,000 'moonlighting' public employees uncovered (ANSA) - Rome, March 13 - More than 11,700 state employees and consultants received pay for unauthorized work outside of their public contracts in 2012, Italian finance police said on Wednesday.

A special investigative police unit monitoring compliance with rules governing civil service and transparency in public administration carried out probes into state-contracted workers' for 2012.

The unit found 859 of those civil servants received payments of approximately six million euros from a second job that was not authorized by the government body for which they work.
