(ANSA) – Rome, March 8 – Italian rubbish production grew at
a faster pace than its gross domestic product and consumption
levels through 2008, according to a environmental report
released on Friday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation
and Development.Even as improvements are evident in the management and the reduction of the number of overall rubbish collection sites, there are still massive differences amongst regions, with some of the areas like Campania, Lazio and Sicily facing particular difficulty.
"The rubbish sites officially considered to be contaminated are about 5,000, within which there are 57 sites considered to be of national interest and that cover 3% of the national territory".
There is also concern about 10,000 rubbish sites that may be potentially contaminated currently under the supervision of the regions, according to the report.
