Packaged meat sales down 30% in Italy amid horsemeat fears (ANSA) - Rome, March 7 - Italian consumer goods association Coldiretti on Thursday said that following the Europe-wide horsemeat scandal, sales in Italy of ready-made pasta dishes, frozen foods and meat sauces have collapsed by 30%.

Coldiretti published its findings after researching the effects on sales of the removal from store shelves in 24 countries of some 200 items.

The research was based on figures provided by eFoodAlert.net.

Several European countries have been experiencing food alerts as products labeled made with beef have been found to contain varying amounts of horsemeat.

The scandal has caused an uproar and raised questions about European countries' food safety standards and the strength of regulatory regimes designed to guarantee quality.
