Scientists investigating causes

Dead spotted dolphin found on elba island beach (ANSA) - Florence, March 8 - The spate of spotted dolphin deaths has been ongoing since the beginning of 2013 in various parts of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In February, two spotted dolphins were found dead on the beaches at Nettuno and Focene, both on the Lazio coast.

"We're still testing, but all we can say so far is that the deaths are not exponential as they would be in cases of some kind of viral epidemic", marine eco-biologist Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara told reporters at the time. "But there is definitely a problem".

Also in February, campers found a dead 1.5-meter dolphin on a beach near the Calabrian town of Vibo Valentia, its tail tangled in rope. That dolphin brought the total number of dolphins found dead of unknown causes on the Calabrian coast since the beginning of the year to seven, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
