Robber killed in shootout with Italian police (ANSA) - Caserta, March 6 - One man was killed and two arrested after shootout broke out when police interrupted a gang of four as they tried to break into a store in the town of Cancello Arnone, near the southern Italian city of Caserta on Tuesday night.

Police opened fire when the burglars tried to flee in a car. Witnesses say police first shot in the air, but then aimed at the robbers after being rammed by their car.

One of the gang was shot and died in the Pinetagrande hospital. Two were arrested and taken into custody. The fourth managed to escape and is believed to be armed with a gun.

Police are searching Rom settlements in the area as the robbers are said to be Rom.
