Queen Elizabeth calls President Napolitano with apologies

Monarch canceled Rome trip due to severe stomach bug

(ANSA) - Rome, March 6 - Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday called Italian President Giorgio Napolitano to apologize for canceling her planned visit to Italy.

The 86-year-old monarch cancelled her engagements Wednesday and Thursday after she was hospitalized briefly due to a severe stomach bug.

Napolitano thanked her for planning to visit him before his seven-year mandate expires on May 15, and for her cordial reception on his four visits to Buckingham Palace.

The queen responded that he is welcome in London should he find the time, a note from the president's office said.
