Violence against women on the rise in Italy
Report by emergency hotline tracks disturbing increase

(ANSA) - Rome, March 4 - Perpetrators of violence against
women in Italy continue to be husbands, partners and
ex-companions, while reported incidents occur ever more
frequently in front of children, Italian emergency hotline
Telefono Rosa said in a report on Monday.In 2012, 124 women were "ferociously killed" in the name of "sick and murderous love," the report said.
Authors of crimes against women have no particular "profile".
"They are men between 35 and 54 years old (61%), 21% white-collar workers and often educated (46% high-school graduates and 19% with university degrees)," the report said. Of the men who abuse their female partners, 63% are reported to not be substance addicts.
The same goes for women, who do not fall in a specific demographic.
Women victims are between 35 and 54 years old, 53% have a highschool diploma and 22% university degree, 20% full-time office job, and 82% have children. In 84% of the cases, the relationships are defined as "normal".
In 48% of the cases, violence occurs at the hands of the husband, 12% carried out by live-in partners and 23% ex-partners or husbands. The report noted that 82% of the women who called the hotline in 2012 said that their children witnessed the violence, up 7% from the previous year.
