Pope's new clothes go on display in Rome (ANSA) - Rome, March 4 - Gammarelli clerical outfitters, tailors to popes since the mid-19th century, put the new pontiff's suit on display Monday morning in the window of their Rome shop.

Since Benedict stunned the world on February 11 with the first papal resignation in 600 years, the Gammarellis have been laboring to create three sizes of vestments for his successor - small, medium and large - so that it will be ready when the famous white smoke plume goes up.

The tailors that a Catholic website calls "the Rome-based equivalent of an ecclesiastical Brooks Brothers" have also put the short, red-velvet cape that covers the pontiff's shoulders known as the mozzetta and a pair of red-leather shoes revived by Benedict on display.
