Monza arrests finger links between Camorra and ex-councillor (ANSA) - Milan, March 4 - Arrests were underway for 37 people on Monday in Milan's northern neighboring city, Monza, as part of a wide-ranging investigation into an alleged criminal racket involving the local government and Naples-based Camorra mafia clans.

Monza investigators believe they have uncovered a group of high-level criminals from the southern Campania region that were in contact with Naples-based Camorra mafia clans Gionta and Mariano. Prosecutors are pursuing charges of theft, extortion, usury, receiving stolen goods, money laundering, spending false currency, possession of illegal drugs and arms, and crimes against the public administration.

The arrests include an order to jail Monza's ex-city councillor for the environment, Giovanni Antonicelli, who was in charge of ecology, waste disposal, cemetery maintenance and public real estate assets during his tenure from 2007 to 2012. A total of 43 people have been either arrested or placed under investigation, including an ex-city council member of Milan, who served from 2009 to 2011, but whose identity has not been disclosed.
