Former leftist terrorist dead after robbery assault in Rome (ANSA) - Rome, March 1 - The assailant killed in a shootout with armored-car personnel in the center of Rome Friday has been identified as a former member of the leftist Red Brigades terrorist group. Giorgio Frau, 56, was killed during a failed robbery assault on a security van near the Basilica of St Mary Major and the central Rome Termini train station. A security guard was also seriously injured. Two accomplices fled the scene on foot but were later apprehended. Witnesses said the assailants were disguised as postal workers and sabotaged the van while aboard scooters. The former Red Brigades member Frau has a list of priors, including illegal arms possession and robbery.
