Fiat sales down in February, but market share up in Italy (ANSA) - Rome, March 1 - Automaker Fiat logged a slump in car sales in February. Fiat reported Friday it sold just under 31,000 cars last month, down 16.8% from February last year. January sales were down 15.76%. But the Turin-based automaker is still managing to increase market share in Italy, where a recession is eating away at buying power and the car market at large. Fiat reported that February sales accounted for 28.48% of the Italian auto market, up on 28.28% from the same month last year. Rising sales in the US of Chrysler, which Fiat controls, gave the company a boost. Sales there were up 4% in February, when 139,015 vehicles went off the lot. It was the best February performance since 2008, Chrysler said.
