Italy's president lauds pope's resignation, wishes him well (ANSA) - Rome, February 28 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said on Benedict XVI's final day as pope that his resignation was an act of "extraordinary historic and human significance".

In an editorial published by the Vatican's Osservatore Romano newspaper Thursday, Napolitano said that Benedict "isn't leaving Italy. And we will continue to feel him close to us, and be close to him with positive wishes".
