Casalesi arrests in Campania and Tuscany

(ANSA) - Naples, February 28 - Italian police on Thursday
arrested more than 20 suspected members of the powerful Casalesi
clan of the Neapolitan Camorra mafia in Campania and Tuscany.Extortion and weapons offences were among the charges faced by those arrested, whose clan was exposed in Roberto Saviano's 2006 bestseller Gomorrah, Italy's Other Mafia. Saviano is living under round-the-clock police protection after death threats from Casalesi bosses.
Police seized 20 million euros in assets in Thursday's operation, which involved hundreds of officers.
Thirteen of the arrests were made in Tuscany.
The Casalesis are among the Camorra clans who have expanded from their bases in and around Naples to penetrate the northern Italian economy.
