Court document says Internet provider cannot verify content
Dossier released from Google managers' acquittal

(ANSA) - Milan, February 27 - Documents released by a Milan
court Wednesday explaining a December ruling acquitting Google
managers of privacy violations explained that "verification of
all material uploaded by users cannot be the duty of the
Internet provider".Interference by providers presents "a risk as it may end up conflicting with freedom of expression and thought," wrote the court of appeals. The case of three Google managers convicted of privacy violation due to a video showing a handicapped student insulted and harassed by schoolmates made international headlines when the managers were handed a six-month prison sentence in February 2010.
The ruling was overturned December 2012 by the Milan appeals court.
The controversial ruling was slammed by the US ambassador to Rome and by the US press for censoring freedom on the Internet.
The video, which showed the victimization of an underaged, handicapped student of a Turin high school, was posted on Google videos in September 2006 and remained accessible for about two months.
