Di Pietro steps down as Italy of Values party head

Supporters ask IdV founder to reconsider, help relaunch

Di Pietro steps down as Italy of Values party head (ANSA) - Rome, February 26 - Antonio Di Pietro tendered his "irrevocable resignation" as head of the anti-graft Italy of Values (IdV) party, the party announced Tuesday.

Supporters asked the former "Clean Hands" star prosecutor to stay on and help "refound, renew and relaunch" the party he founded, a statement said. The party's presidency said that it wanted Di Pietro to revoke his resignation and remain with the party as it goes through a rebuilding process that calls for, among other steps, the start of a new party congress by December 31.

In its statement, the IdV presidency admitted that its recent electoral experience - within a political alliance called Civil Revolution - was "flunked" by voters.
