Palermo court orders waste-management plant's seizure

Faulty tank leaking contaminated water into surrounding grounds

(ANSA) - Palermo, February 26 - Officials in Palermo seized a landfill and waste-processing center on Tuesday after discovering that contaminated water was leaking from a tank into the surrounding area and polluting groundwater.

A temporary custodian will be appointed by the court that served an injunction for operations to be halted until the landfill is secured and an additional tank is added.

Regional waste management authorities said that the closing of the faulty tank will be coordinated with the activation of the replacement to avoid interrupting services.
